While it is definitely the best monster catching knock off I’ve played. Its difficulty is higher than that of Pokemon as well. Overall Nexomon: Extinction is 100% heavily inspired by Pokemon but aimed at an older audience. The world is pretty alive in the sense that many NPCs will actually have a reason to talk to you, whether to do a side quest that provides you with some decent rewards or items or some are looking for specific Nexomon and will offer cash (which is pretty sweet). The writing in this game is very funny at times as many characters break the fourth wall and make dark or sarcastic remarks to you the player. When catching Nexomon is pretty similar, you weaken your target and then toss your trap and catch them with a quick time button pushing event sequence to seal the deal. Swapping out your Nexomon is clutch here as VERY rarely do you end up so overpowered that you can one-hit kill your opponent. Some slight differences make it stand out, instead of PP per special move of your monsters there is overall stamina that will deduct the PP from the overall bank instead of per move. Plays exactly as Pokemon does so is very familiar to anyone who has played these monster-catching RPGs. Runs perfectly didn’t run into any issues during my game time. Graphically the game looks pretty darn good, dare I even say, better than Pokemon at times. There are nine different types of Nexomon (Normal, Fire, Water, Plant, Mineral, Wind, Electric, Psychic, and Ghost) that each has advantages and disadvantages against the other types. With 381 different Nexomon to choose from and capture it feels very much like Pokemon, even some of the character models look similar. ![]() There are of course trainers who befriend the Nexomon and with their help turn the tide. Its a story about a war of Nexomon vs Mankind. ![]() You start the game off as a young orphan about to receive his first Nexomon and go on a journey to become a legendary trainer, sound familiar?īut quickly the game takes a different spin with a much more adult story of a Tyrant (Dragon) that is hell-bent on ridding the world of the human race. From the top-down view to the types of monsters, to the gameplay loop (capture, train, repeat). Right off the bat, this game gave me serious Pokemon vibes. The dynamic difficulty will see the world around you get more challenging as you progress, as even defeated trainers come back stronger than before and ready to battle again!.Uncover secrets, stumble upon side-quests, and encounter a raft of eccentric characters. From arid deserts to freezing tundra, navigate challenging environments, and manage their effects on your Nexomon. ![]()
![]() Coins, points and praise (an often underused type of reward) can be effective too. Unlockable characters and unlockable items can be used to create a gratifying reward system. Rewards can add both surprise and wonder while emotionally connecting with players as well. During the game design process you can add different unlockable characters, give them animated actions, effects, and unique expressions that play into your game’s core theme. They can give your game emotional depth and serve as an effective reward system. Adding More Surprises in Your Game DesignĬharacters are also powerful elements to use. It’s the small details that add surprise and wonder to your game. If your game is an eerie platformer you can add spooky background music and creepy sound effects that play whenever an item is discovered or platform falls. If it’s a racing game, adding a fast-paced adrenaline-pumping beat will resonate with players. Maybe you can add interesting sound effects or background music that compliments your game’s pace, mood, or theme. Keep your game’s theme and art style in mind and brainstorm how you can add these elements in each aspect. Sound effects, music, character expressions text, movement, and even color combinations can really help players connect and get into your game. ![]() Since games are an interactive media, it’s extremely easy to evoke emotion from users. You can create an emotional experience through the gameplay, characters, level design, and even with the user interface using this game design technique. It’s all about the element of surprise and wonder when you’re trying to capture a player’s attention. Players will want to continue to explore or beat their previous score to see what rewards or special bonus is awaiting ahead. However, when you add emotions and rewards into the mix you create an interactive experience that becomes memorable. As a result, your replay value and retention will be ZERO, along with your profits. Without that emotional connection, players will quickly get bored of your game, quit playing, and ultimately delete the app. You want your players to fall in love with your game and keep coming back for more. Establishing this connection is key when you’re creating a game. Surprise and wonder can help players form an emotional connection with your game. It’s also the secret sauce to turning a new player into a life-long fan of your game. Let’s take a closer look at each of these … #1 – Surprise and WonderĪdding surprise and wonder to your game is a factor that’s rarely discussed, but critical for any game to achieve long-term success. Below you’ll find five often overlooked, but extremely important, factors for creating unique games that people want to play.
